Ransom.Mole is a file-encrypting Trojan which is used to encode the files stored on victim's machine and it has been associated with a recently used spam email campaigns. It may arrive onto the targeted user's mail inbox which pretends to be a shipping notification, claiming that a package could not be delivered and also includes a link for further information. When the users click on provided links, then they asked to install a MS Word Online plug-in, which is actually Ransom.Mole virus. The given link allows the malware to be installed on the user's machine through deceptive ways. Once it successfully gets installed onto the victims' PC, it will display a fake alert which specifically designed by the cyber crooks in order to trick the victimized system users into skipping the “User Account Control” prompt.

When the system users pressed OK button displayed in this fake alert message, the threat will be executed. Since, Ransom.Mole will display the User Account Control prompt which allows the malicious executable file to be executed. It gives the Trojan administrative privileges, allows this virus to encipher the files stored on victim's machine. This file-encrypting virus uses a combination of RSA and AES encryption algorithm to encode the victim's files or data and then makes the encrypted files completely inaccessible. Before carrying out its malicious attack, the threat will attempt to stop the security processes on the infected machine by issuing following harmful commands:

  • sc stop BITS
  • sc stop wscsvc
  • sc stop WerSv
  • sc stop WinDefend
  • sc stop ERSvc
  • sc stop wuauserv

Step 1: How to Start your PC in Safe Mode with Networking to Get Rid of Ransom.Mole

(For Win 7 | XP | Vista Users)

  • first of all PC is to be rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking
  • Select on Start Button and Click on Shutdown | Restart option and select OK
  • when the PC restarts, keep tapping on F8 until you don’t get Advanced Boot Options.
  • Safe Mode with Networking Option is to be selected from the list.
