[email protected] is an extremely dangerous malware that has been classified as a ransomware. Their main purpose is to encrypt files in the targeted system. The files after getting encrypted can no longer be used as before. Users are informed regarding this encryption and are advised to obtain a decryptor in form of a private key by contacting the concerned cyber-criminals. They are typically instructed to pay certain amount as ransom for receiving the decryption key. Though it would be advised that users should not follow these instructions under any circumstances. It has been found out that [email protected] ransomware belongs to the family of FROZEN ransomware. This family has many ransomware which are widely circulated all over the web using various means such as spam emails, fake freeware, software updates and patch-ups. The spam method uses exclusively crafted messages having different templates, which helps it in evading the security filters. Even some users can be persuaded and believe their legitimacy. These messages have been designed to contain names and brand association with reputed firms. They usually have intimidating subject line such as order memo and product invoice which make users click on them. [email protected] is usually embedded within these documents as macros and can thus execute its payload upon initiation. The bundled-up method is normally used to install silently within the system as the ransomware may be hidden under a legitimate file formate with a valid name. Users can be ignorant about the installation process and thus can allow the execution of files associated with the malware.

[email protected] has been designed to evaluate the targeted host system. It helps the ransomware to encrypt important files and it is capable of encrypting files of various formats such as images, audio files, video clips, text based documents, spreadsheets and databases, archives and backups. Soon after encryption, the ransomware has been found to rename the file with long sentences such as '…Files-Frozen-NEED-TO-MAKE-PAYMENT-FOR-DECRYPTOR-OR-ALL-YOUR-FILES-WILL-BE-PERMANENTLY-DELETED'. These extensions render the file unreadable by the operating system and hence cannot be further used. It leaves a ransom note named as 'HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt' which informs users to pay a sum of 0.08 BTC, to receive the decryptor. It would be wise for users not to contact them on [email protected], as they may find these instructions useful in removing the ransomware.
