FoxRansom Ransomware is a recently discovered malware that is capable of file encryption and renders those file as unusable. The malware was reported by security researchers on August 9, 2018 in several media columns. It has been detected to be spreading through spam messages, suspicious sites and software bundles as they can easily deceive users. FoxRansom Ransomware seems to be in its initial phase of circulation as the infected samples have been detected to be situated in Hungary. Though such malware can easily spread to other locations using the networks that have been infected with it. And therefore systems need to have strong firewall capabilities to detect such threat before they infiltrate the targeted system and its network. The payload file of this Ransomware has been identified to run in offline mode and can be found with the name 'FoxRansom-offline.exe'. The ransomware has been based upon HiddenTear open-source code which has been used to develop several such malware in past as well.

FoxRansom Ransomware can encrypt files of various formats that allows it to demand ransom from users who are affected. The files becomes unrecognizable to the operating system as their name changes and added withan extension of '.fox'. Files such as images, text, documents, databases, presentations, archives and backups can get encrypted which makes it urgent for users to find a solution. FoxRansom Ransomware leaves a ransom note behind which is named as 'READ_IT.txt' that informs users about the attack and tells them about the process that needs to be carried out to restore their encrypted files. The note does not give details about the exact amount that needs to be paid which can be assumed to be negotiable. However that would not be recommended. The ransomware also makes changes to registry and is capable of deleting shadow volume copies that makes it difficult to restore the encrypted file back.

FoxRansom Ransomware has been primarily designed to receive ransom money and it is highly unlikely that the developers behind it will help affected users with a decryption key. The system however may be attacked with another malware disguised as a decryptor software. Users should not even attempt to pay the ransom amount, instead it would be recommended to use these steps to remove it easily.
