DUMB ransomware, a cryptomalware has been coded by Alfur – a member of GitHub registered under AlphaDelta nick name. The ransomware is coded into C# programming language and presented as a fast ransomware evidence of concept. During initial research, we found that DUMB ransomware appears to be created just for fun cause developers borrowed the codes from DUMB project and built Ramsomeer Cryptomalware. This ransomware has an user friendly interface but it displays needful information in two languages – English and Turkish. Though, it won’t be false, if we say the both ransomware is relevant to each other.

Furthermore, speaking of DUMB cryptomalware, it encodes your saved files using XOR pad generated via ISAAC CSPRNG instead using usual AES or RSA open source encryption standard. Surprisingly, the ransomware easily encrypts files larger than 4GB in size on the compromised Windows PC. These files can be unlocked using simple trick – you need to terminate ‘Main’ program that DUMB ransomware launches each time Windows starts. When it comes to ransom note, it inform that your files have been encrypted, in 48 hours the decryption key will be deleted from unless you deposit 100 didgeridoos into their private didgeridoos wallet with the heading ‘You have been stuck with DUMB’.

Experts’ suggestion to the victims of DUMB ransomware

First things first, if you are thinking that after ransom pay off, DUMB Ransomware attackers would provide you a working files decryption key then beware. Most of the victims have reported that either decryption key isn’t working or after getting paid they didn’t send any decryption key. Actually, they are con artists and cyber criminals, they just don’t care about what ever is happening with you. You can not take any legal action against them because of the lacks of evidence against the attacker.

Hence, security experts advises victims to utilize some alternative file recovery options like System Restore Point and Data Recovery software.
